Teaching children is a continual learning experience for me. With each new student comes another way to see and explore the art experience. I truly enjoy the fresh imagination and willingness to experiment that children of all ages have.

Marlene has contributed greatly to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia with her expertise in the visual arts, creative and innovative ideas and excellent communication skills. Marlene is an accomplished artist and an outstanding educator. She has outstanding classroom skills engaging students with ease and encouragement. Her positive outlook, flexibility, solid art skills and sense of humour are much appreciated by students and AGNS staff. Marlene is a thoughtful, multi-talented individual.
-- Dale Sheppard, Curator of Education and Public Programs

Over the past several years I had the good fortune to have Marlene York visit my grade three classroom to instruct my students on several art forms. I was impressed each time with the adept manner that she employed in reaching the students and their positive response to her. She had a lovely, gentle manner with the boys and girls and brought out their best effort. Her knowledge of each topic was thorough and she maximized use of materials and time. The activities that Marlene brought to my classroom were stimulating for the children and appropriate for the abilities of all grade three students. It was a pleasure working with Marlene.
-- Jackie McIsaac Rogers, Grade Three Teacher, Colby Village School

For the past 9 years, I have engaged with Marlene in many contexts such as co-worker (4C’s Project at Lakeview School), parent and student (Seaforth Studio). Marlene has an ease to have vision. Never is a project too big for her. From conceptual ideas of huge projects to their actualization in a school environment or in her studio, she brings everyone into a place of co-creating success. She is a totally open, caring, highly resourceful, innovator and an accomplished expert in her field - filled with passion for what she does. When my three children or my students take her classes, they always grow in spirit, confidence, love and knowledge of art.
-- Celine Levasseur Burlock BEd

I have two sons who have had the privilege of having Marlene York as their art teacher. One child has been attending her art class for 8 years, and my other child for 4 years. Marlene works with all children with great patience and has a natural way of making them feel good about their work, which in turn boosts their self-esteem. My children always look forward to going to her class and thoroughly enjoy the large variety of projects they work on. As an elementary school teacher, I am also extremely impressed with her capability to deal with a wide range of abilities in her class. Marlene’s gentle but competent ability to maintain appropriate behavior in her class is commendable.
